Interview with Denver Real Estate Investor Kelenna Azubuike

August 5, 2020 • Chris Lopez

Terrance Doyle and I sat down with former NBA player and Denver investor Kelenna Azubuike to discuss how he got started investing in real estate and his current strategy.

Kelenna started with single family fix and flips in Denver in 2009. He worked as a team with his mother and brother finding bank owned or foreclosure properties, renovating them and either selling or holding them. After following that strategy from 2009-2014, he changed to buying turnkey buy-and-hold properties. He found that his full time job doesn’t leave time for dealing with contractors and tenants. His goal is to build a real estate portfolio that provides a passive income stream.

Kelenna was a guest host in a Ride Along show that will be released on the BiggerPockets YouTube channel in the next couple of months. Check it out to see what it’s like to do an initial walkthrough in a fourplex investment property in Aurora.

Background on Kelenna Azubuike

Kelenna was the nation’s leading scorer in high school and one of the top ranked recruits. He went on to play at the University of Kentucky under Tubby Smith. After 3 years at Kentucky, Kelenna decided to leave school and enter the NBA draft in 2005. After one full season in the NBA’s Developmental League, Kelenna signed with the Golden State Warriors in 2007. He played a total of 7 seasons in the NBA, 5 with the Golden State Warriors, followed by the New York Knicks, ending with the Dallas Mavericks.

Following his NBA career, Kelenna went back to the University of Kentucky to get his degree and shortly after began a career in broadcasting with the Golden State Warriors. He is currently the full-time color commentator for the Warriors.
